How To Defend Against Cybercrime

Cybercrime represents a $2 trillion annual business, representing 15 percent of the global production of goods and services, according to the United Nations. Each year, criminals hone their skills and tools to become more adept at penetrating computer systems to steal credit-card numbers and corporate and government secrets.
This year already has seen some high-profile break-ins. The most recent was at credit-card processor Global Payments, which acknowledged the theft of 1.5 million card numbers and other important information that could be used to produce counterfeit Visa and MasterCard credit cards. While such security breaches are sure to continue as the year progresses, there are steps small businesses can take to improve security online and in the office.
Here are seven tips from Karl Volkman, chief technology officer for Chicago-based IT services firm and Microsoft partner SRV Network.

Get A Firewall
Every small business should have a firewall limiting access to the network. The firewall should be the first line of defense.

Tighten Control

Internet usage in the office should be tightly controlled. In addition, businesses should have gateway antivirus and content filtering as the second line of defense after the firewall.
  
Continuous Review
 Managers should review on a monthly or quarterly basis user accounts and usage rights to data.
  
Physical Protection
Security does not end with what's inside the computer. Businesses need to make sure their hardware is physically protected as well. All guests should be accompanied throughout the office space, and computer displays should be hidden from view from walkways and open areas.

Better Passwords
Businesses should enforce good password policies, which include setting rules for complexity and frequency of change. Simply using your mother's maiden name isn't sufficient.

Spend Some Money

Businesses that can afford it should hire full-time data security people. In addition, budgets should include money for equipment and software to battle cybercriminals.

Employee Training

Employees need to be taught to be cautious. A few simple rules can improve security in a small office: Avoid questionable e-mail Web sites, delete any questionable e-mail and do not click on hyperlinks. Instead of the latter, employees should Google the topic and try to find the Web site from there.

Make Your PC Safe for 2012


New malware is still being introduced at an alarming rate: Alone in the last five years it has been rising by about 5,000 %. Such growth rates may be any shareholder's dream at the moment but here they are evidence of the immense profitability of the hacker industry. Your personal data, online connections or even access to your PC make the cash registers ring. This makes developing increasingly sophisticated and less easily detected ways to infect your PC more and more lucrative for clever programmers. But there is no need to panic, as we are going to show you in this article how to avoid unnecessary risks and how to keep on surfing the web with your PC safely in 2012!

1 - Keep Your System up-to-date

We all know that update notifications can be annoying. Still, your PC and all installed programs should always be up-to-date. Malware programmers often use newly discovered software weaknesses (so-called "vulnerabilities") to smuggle their malware onto your PC via exploits. Therefore, update your software on a regular basis - especially if it is widely used - in order to close potential security gaps as soon as possible. The following software on your PC should always be kept up-to-date:
  • OS (Windows operating system)
  • Your browser: MS Internet Explorer, Firefox, Chrome, Opera, etc.
  • Adobe Acrobat Reader
  • Adobe Flash Player
  • Java Runtime
  • Apple Quicktime Video Player
  • Your media player (VLC, iTunes, Windows Media Player)

2 - Use Secure Passwords

Your PC may be as secure as a safe, but that is useless if an unauthorized person gets their hands on the keys. No matter whether it is your Windows login, web mail or password to a website: use only secure passwords! A secure password consists of at least eight characters and contains a number, an uppercase letter and a special character, such as "ApL47bAk!". Avoid common words like names and use different passwords for all your accounts and connections. If you use one password for all, a hacker gains access to all your data by just cracking one password successfully. To keep track of several passwords, we recommend using a password manager.

3 - Use a Router

It is common nowadays for internet connection packages to include a router. A router enables several devices to simultaneously use the same internet connection. Securitywise, this is a huge advantage as your PC does not directly connect to the web, which makes it difficult to directly address and attack it. If, for whatever reason, you still do not have a router, you should consider it a good investment. The same rules apply here: always keep the router up-to-date, that is, regular firmware updates and a secure admin password are a necessity.

4 - Avoid File Sharing Websites

Apart from the fact that they are mostly offering illegal content, file sharing websites are among the most common sources for malware infections. Cracked programs or so-called key generators ("keygens") in particular are often infected with malware. It is safer to download original software from the manufacturer's website or from well-known download sites.

5 - Use Restricted User Accounts

Many Windows users are using the administrator account. As an administrator, you have unrestricted access to modifying important system settings, which allows malware executed as an administrator to settle and spread with ease. If you have Windows XP you should use an account with restricted user rights for working and browsing the web. Windows Vista and 7 come with a built-in and redesigned User Account Control (UAC). Any process likely to cause damage to or be a threat to the security of your system needs the administrator's permission to do so. Never grant administrator rights to any unknown or suspicious programs!

6 - Avoid Doubtful Websites and E-mail Attachments

Today, most malware is spread via so-called "drive-by downloads". Modern websites are using different technologies to enable the continuous communication between your browser and the web server without asking you, the user, for confirmation. Programmers of criminal websites rely on this technology to take advantage of security gaps in various browsers. We recommend staying away from any doubtful or shady websites (file sharing, warez and erotic websites in particular) and to keep your browser up-to-date as described in point 1.
E-mail attachments are still the most popular way of spreading malware. What helps best is a good spam filter. Always remain skeptic if you receive e-mails from unknown senders and pay particular attention to any attachments before opening them; executable files like .exe or .com are often disguised as documents or images. 7 - Beware of Unsecured WiFi Hotspots

There are many WiFi hotspots free of charge available that allow you to check your e-mails and surf the internet when you are on the go using your laptop or smartphone. But whenever you log into a website or check your e-mails via an unsecured WiFi connection, others can read your log-in data. Send confidential data only if it is absolutely necessary, and even then only over a secure connection! You recognize a secure connection by the "s" which directly follows the typical "http" in the address bar, i.e. "https://" (Hypertext Transfer Protocol Secure). This applies to online banking as well as forums, webmail accounts, ebay or Facebook log-ins - i.e. it applies generally for any log-in. If you use an e-mail client, you should also enable secure log-in in the settings.

8 - Use Security Software With Real-Time Protection

By following our advice you are already quite safe - but there will always be a small risk remaining. This is why we recommend the use of anti-virus software and a firewall. The anti-virus software checks files on your PC whereas a firewall monitors any incoming and outgoing connections. If there are any suspicious processes, a message will pop up to warn you about the risk.
Both programs should offer real-time protection. Regular scans with a virus scanner are good and important. However, they can only detect already existing infections with malware on your PC and may not always be able to remove them.

2012 Threat Predictions



Looking back on 2011, FortiGuard Labs saw a number of landmark developments in the world of network security. Huge botnets such as DNS Changer and Coreflood were permanently taken off line, 64-bit rootkits advanced (TDSS), source code was leaked for the Zeus and SpyEye botnets , and Anonymous hacktivists raised their profile by taking down major banks offline and threatening to go after a critical infrastructure.

Many of these events the team predicted in their “Top 5 Security Predictions for 2011,” while others, such as legislation to potentially jail and fine individuals who had malicious code stored on computer systems were more surprising.

2012 promises to be even more worrisome. After gazing into FortiCrystalball this month, FortiGuard Labs saw eight network security trends that could happen in the coming year. In short, the Labs are predicting a rise of mobile malware (with new worms and polymorphism) , increased crackdowns on network run money laundering operations, renewed and successful collaboration between government and the private sectors, discoveries of exploitable SCADA vulnerabilities, an increase in sponsored attacks, and Anonymous hacktivists using their powers for good over evil. The full report is outlined below.

1. Ransomware to Take Mobile Devices Hostage
Over the past few years, FortiGuard Labs has witnessed the evolution and success of “ransomware” (an infection that holds a device “hostage” until a “ransom” payment is delivered) on the PC. Mobile malware that utilize exploits have also been observed, along with social engineering tricks that lead to root access on the infected device. With root access comes more control and elevated privileges, suitable for the likes of ransomware. FortiGuard predicts the team will see the first instances of ransomware on a mobile device in the coming year.

2. Worming into Android
Worms, i.e., malware that is able to quickly propagate from one device to another, have by and large remained absent from the Android operating system, but FortiGuard Labs believes that will change in 2012. Unlike Cabir, the first Symbian worm discovered in 2004, Android malware developers most likely won’t be using Bluetooth or computer sync to spread out because of their limited ranges. Instead, the team believes the threat will come from either poisoned SMS messages that include a link that contains the worm or through infected links on social networks, such as Facebook and Twitter.

3. Polymorphism Want a Cracker?
There’s no denying that Android-based malware has gotten more diverse and complex. In the last year: FortiGuard Labs has seen Android malware use encryption, embed exploits, detect emulators and implement botnets. But what they haven’t seen yet is an example of polymorphism in action. Polymorphism is malware that is capable of automatically mutating, making it extremely difficult to identify and thus destroy. The team has previously encountered polymorphism on Windows Mobile phones and believes it’s only a matter of time before the malware appears on Android devices.

4. Clampdown on Network-Based Money Laundering
Money mules, which typically consist of third party individuals electronically transferring money from one person or service to another and illegitimate payment processors, are critical components to a successful money laundering and fraud operation. Using anonymous fund transferring services, human networks and payment processor safe havens, cybercriminal syndicates have pretty much operated with impunity for years. How do you catch someone when you don’t even know where they’re located? FortiGuard believes that will change in 2012 [By this, are you saying in 2012 we expect to be able to catch these people?]. The recent arrest of ChronoPay CEO Pavel Vrublevsky’s on the grounds of hacking Aerfolot’s Website and preventing visitors from buying tickets, is a good example of the type of takedowns the team expects to see in the coming year.

5. Public-Private Relationships in Security
Last year FortiGuard Labs predicted they’d see an increase in global collaborative botnet takedowns. And they were right not only with botnet takedowns, but global collaboration period. Among globally-supported botnet takedowns were Rustock and DNS Changer while other international efforts helped take a massive scareware operation offline that siphoned $72 million in bank funds. Meanwhile, arrests were made against international members of Anonymous and LulzSec hacktivist groups. This crackdown will continue in 2012, and the team believes that much of it will be aided by Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency’s (DARPA’s) public defense initiative. DARPA was recently granted $188 million budget and plans to use part of the money on initiatives to build a cyber defense team in the private sector. With recent movement, it seems likely that in 2012 we will start to see similar relationships formed worldwide.

6. SCADA Under the Scope
For over a decade, Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition- (SCADA) based threats have been a concern, because they are often connected to critical infrastructure such as power and water grids that would have serious consequences if they were ever breached. This last year FortiGuard saw two examples of this in the form of Stuxnet, which compromised Iran’s nuclear program and Duqu, a Stuxnet-like virus that used similar attack methods and stolen certificates. While Iranian officials confirmed the latter had infected systems in the region, no hostile industrial code has been found to date. However, it’s clear the building blocks are now in place. The reality today is that critical infrastructure systems are not always operating on a closed circuit. New human machine interface (HMI) devices that interact with these systems are being developed by a number of different software and hardware manufacturers, and many have Web interfaces for logging in. And the FortiGuard team has seen historically that Web-based interfaces that interact with back end systems can many times be circumvented. Even more concerning is the migration to cloud-based SCADA services. This allows data storage and potential control of critical systems on a public cloud server – hence the security concern. Groups like Anonymous have already found an assortment of Web-based vulnerabilities simply by picking targets and scouring code. In 2012, FortiGuard predicts a number of SCADA vulnerabilities will be discovered and exploited with potentially devastating consequences.

7. Sponsored Attacks
The FortiGuard team often talks about Crime as a Service (CaaS), which is just like Software as a Service (SaaS), but instead of offering legal and helpful services though the Internet, criminal syndicates are offering illegal and detrimental services, such as infecting large quantities of computers, sending spam and even launching direct denial of service (DDoS) attacks. If you’ve got the money, there’s a good chance you can find a CaaS provider to help you out. What FortiGuard sees evolving in 2012, is that instead of hiring a CaaS outfit for blanket attacks, they’re going to see more strategic and targeted attacks on companies and individuals. This scope would include state or corporate sponsorship. Admittedly, this prediction will be tough to monitor because without “freedom of information” legislation in place, many of these discovered cases will be settled out of court with verdicts not being released publicly. For example, Russian payment processor ChronoPay allegedly hired a hacker to attack a direct competitor (Assist) in 2011.

8. Hacking a Good Cause
While Anonymous has been alive and kicking in one capacity or another since its formation on 4Chan.org in 2003, only in the last year have the loosely organized anarchists started using their power to attack large, high profile targets such as Sony. More hacktivist groups were formed in 2011 (most notably LulzSec), and more will likely rise in 2012. What FortiGuard found interesting about Anonymous towards the end of the year, was how the group started to use their power for “good.” Case in point, they’ve recently threatened to unmask Mexican drug cartel members and they recently helped authorities break up a child porn ring. FortiGuard expects to see more examples of “hacktivist” justice meted out throughout 2012 along with a mix of attacks that border or cross the line of justice.

2. Spyware and viruses

Spyware and viruses are software programs that are loaded on your computer without your knowledge or permission. They have various purposes, including:

Check the Efficiency of your Anti-Virus Software

Some time ago certain developers of antivirus software have started adding test files to their packages. Antivirus software detects it as a virus although it is not a virus. Such test “viruses” are designed to satisfy the curiosity of users who do not have “live samples” of a virus, but want to see the reaction of antivirus software to appearance of a virus (how it informs the user, what actions prompts, etc.).

Later antivirus software vendors came to an agreement about developing a uniform standard "virus simulator" which should consist of text messages only. The latter allows any user to create such a "virus" manually (for example, by copying it from the documentation). The resulting .com file looks like this:

Ten Commandments for Your Computer Sanity

1. Dont assume anything. Make some time to learn about securing your system.

2. Acquire and use a reliable antivirus program. Select an antivirus that has a consistent track record. Checkmark, AV-Test.org and TuV are among the most respected independent testers of antivirus software.

3. Acquire and use a reliable firewall solution. Again, independent reviewers are your best bet for reasonable choices. Some operating systems come with a firewall which only filters incoming traffic. Use a firewall that can control both incoming and outgoing Internet traffic.

4. Do not open e-mails coming from unknown or distrusted sources. Many viruses spread via e-mail messages so please ask for a confirmation from the sender if you are in any doubt.

5. Do not open the attachments of messages with a suspicious or unexpected subject. If you want to open them, first save them to your hard disk and scan them with an updated antivirus program.

6. Delete any chain e-mails or unwanted messages. Do not forward them or reply to their senders. This kind of messages is considered spam, because it is undesired and unsolicited and it overloads the Internet traffic.

7. Avoid installing services and applications which are not needed in day-by-day operations in a desktop role, such as file transfer and file sharing servers, remote desktop servers and the like. Such programs are potential hazards, and should not be installed if not absolutely necessary.

8. Update your system and applications as often as possible. Some operating systems and applications can be set to update automatically. Make full use of this facility. Failure to patch your system often enough may leave it vulnerable to threats for which fixes already exist.

9. Do not copy any file if you don't know or don't trust its source. Check the source (provenance) of files you download and make sure that an antivirus program has already verified the files at their source.

10. Make backups of important personal files (correspondence, documents, pictures and such) on a regular basis. Store these copies on removable media such as CD or DVD. Keep your archive in a different location than the one your computer is in.

However, while using the Internet, along with the convenience and speed of access to information come new risks. Among them are the risks that valuable information will be lost, stolen, corrupted, or misused and that the computer systems will be corrupted. If information is recorded electronically and is available on networked computers, it is more vulnerable than if the same information is printed on paper and locked in a file cabinet. Intruders do not need to enter an office or home, and may not even be in the same country. They can steal or tamper with information without touching a piece of paper or a photocopier. They can create new electronic files, run their own programs, and even hide all evidence of their unauthorized activity.


Basic Internet security concepts:

The three basic security concepts important to information on the Internet are:

Confidentiality.
Integrity.
Availability.

Concepts related to people using this information are authentication, authorization, and nonrepudiation. When information is read or copied by someone not authorized to do so, the result is known as loss of confidentiality. For some types of information, confidentiality is a very important attribute. Examples include research data, medical and insurance records, new product specifications, and corporate investment strategies. In some locations, there may be a legal obligation to protect the privacy of individuals. This is particularly true for most banks and loan companies, debt collecting agencies, businesses that offer credit to their customers or issue credit cards, hospitals, doctors' offices, and medical testing laboratories, individuals or agencies that offer services such as psychological counseling or drug treatment and agencies that collect any form of taxes.

Information can be corrupted when it is available on an insecure network. When information is modified in unexpected ways, the result is known as loss of integrity. This means that unauthorized changes are made to information, whether by human error or intentional tampering. Integrity is particularly important for critical safety and financial data used for activities such as electronic funds transfers, air traffic control, and financial accounting.

Information can be erased or become inaccessible, resulting in loss of availability. This means that people who are authorized to get information cannot get what they need. Availability is often the most important attribute in service-oriented businesses that depend on information (e.g., airline schedules and online inventory systems). Availability of the network itself is important to anyone whose business or education relies on a network connection. When a user cannot get access to the network or specific services provided on the network, they experience a denial of service.

To make information available to those who need it and who can be trusted with it, organizations use authentication and authorization. Authentication is proving that a user is whom he or she claims to be. That proof may involve something the user knows (such as a password), something the user has (such as a "smartcard"), or something about the user that proves the person's identity (such as a fingerprint). Authorization is the act of determining whether a particular user (or computer system) has the right to carry out a certain activity, such as reading a file or running a program. Authentication and authorization go hand in hand. Users must be authenticated before carrying out the activity they are authorized to perform. Security is strong when the means of authentication cannot later be refuted - the user cannot later deny that he or she performed the activity. This is known as nonrepudiation.


Why should we be concerned about Internet security ?

It is remarkably easy to gain unauthorized access to information in an insecure networked environment, and it is hard to catch the intruders. Even if users have nothing stored on their computer that they consider important, that computer can be a "weak link", allowing unauthorized access to the organization's systems and information. Seemingly innocuous information can expose a computer system to compromise. Information that intruders find useful includes which hardware and software are being used, system configuration, type of network connections, phone numbers, and access and authentication procedures. Security-related information can enable unauthorized individuals to get access to important files and programs, thus compromising the security of the whole system. How to run a PC without Anti-Virus --- ( Part-2 )



Use built-in protections

Antivirus protection might not yet be a built-in feature of Windows and other operating systems, but security has long been of concern to everyone who uses computers, and the result is that you'll find some malware protection already built in to the computer you're currently using.

Before your computer even loads your operating system, it launches the code found in your system's BIOS (basic input-output system), which initiates the hardware in your PC and enables your operating system to identify the components you have. Within the BIOS of most PCs -- accessible by pressing F2 or Del during bootup -- is an optional boot sector protection mechanism. Enable this, and you'll protect against boot sector viruses without ever installing a single antivirus tool.

From within your operating system, there are tools you can use to help ward off evil software, too. All browsers today, for instance, provide some security tools, including anti-phishing filters or lists of Web sites that are known carriers of harmful software. Use these features -- they won't slow you down.


Free Operating System tools

In addition, there are free tools available that are less obtrusive than most antivirus packages. Microsoft provides Windows Defender for free on Windows Vista, and it's available as a free download for Windows XP and Windows Server 2003.

Windows Defender's focus is on spyware, which can be among the most dangerous types of malicious software, since its primary purpose is to track what you do and, in some cases, steal personal information.


Watch those websites

Common sense will go a long way toward keeping your computer safe if you don't use antivirus software. Stay away from sites that are frequent carriers of spyware. These include, ironically, many sites that purportedly sell anti-spyware software.

A list of such sites is at the Spyware Warrior Rogue/Suspect Web Sites page (http://www.spywarewarrior.com/rogue_anti-spyware.htm#sites). Porn and gaming sites are also to be approached warily if you have no spyware or antivirus protection.


Email with care

Delete any e-mail message from an unknown source if it contains an attachment. The majority of malware contracted through e-mail comes in the form of attachments that the sender tries to get the recipient to open.

Just say no. The large majority of viruses are contracted from unsolicited e-mail, so use an e-mail application with a built-in spam checker, if at all possible. Sometimes viruses are carried in Word documents from friends or colleagues who are not aware that the files are protected.

In such cases, without an onboard antivirus tool, it makes sense to run the file through one of the free online scanners mentioned earlier. Do this before you open the file.

The payoff for all of this caution should be well-known to anyone who has watched with chagrin as an otherwise speedy and trouble-free computer was made to feel like yesterday's technology after the latest bloated antivirus software was installed. Less really is more, if you can get away with it. And for those intrepid computer users with a survival plan, doing without antivirus protection can be a giant step in the right

Use these features -- they won't slow you down. Common sense is your biggest defense.

First things first: you should have some kind of antivirus protection on your PC, especially if you surf the Internet or trade files with anyone. There are plenty of people, though, who hate antivirus programs -- and with good reason. Most of them are resource hogs, slowing down your computer; many of them throw up more false positive warnings than legitimate ones, slowing down your work and annoying you in the process. These days, most are leased on a yearly basis, meaning you must pay up every year in order to keep your antivirus signatures current.

All of that adds up to some pretty painful medicine to have to swallow to potentially rid your PC of some malicious software. Can you possibly just say "no" to antivirus software? The short answer is, "yes, you can." But to remain virus and spyware free, you'll need to adopt some precautions -- and stick with them.


Use clean software

An antivirus-free computer should start and stop with legitimate, clean software. That means eschewing copies of programs that can be downloaded through warez sites or on newsgroups, borrowed from friends through file sharing, or found on shareware and freeware sites.

Remember that being without an antivirus program often means living without on-demand scanning, so a file you download online isn't as easy to check for viruses as it would be if you had an antivirus program installed. Still, plenty of people can and do assemble systems solely with commercial, off-the-shelf applications, and you can, too.


Scan your PC remotely

If you have more than one PC, you can install antivirus software on one while leaving the other machine without antivirus software. If the two machines can see each other over a network -- home or office -- then you should be able to map the drives of one computer onto the one with antivirus software installed and scan individual files or entire drives through your network connection.

Or you could take advantage of free online virus and spyware scanning tools. Trend Micro's House Call (http://housecall.trendmicro.com) and Eset's Online Scan (http://www.eset.com/onlinescan) will perform a scan of your computer right from the Internet. Such scans might not remove any viruses or spyware found, but they

will at least tell you how clean your computer is.
